Famous Women---D

 

Our famous D is:

Dorothea Dix (1802-1887)


Quick facts:

Ms. Dix was a teacher.
She opened a school in Boston
for well to do families Later she
taught poor and neglected children
out of a barn on her Grandmother's
property.

She was a writer.

Spent some time working as a
governess.

Activist for the mentally challenged.
Due to poor health, her physician
suggested a trip to Europe.
While there she met several people
working for the equality for those
with mental challenges.
She created the first mental asylums
while lobbying state legislatures and
Congress.

During the Civil War she was appointed
to Superintendent of Army Nurses.
During that time she was a crusader
for equality of nurses. She worked hard
at providing the best care possible for
the soldiers and expected the same
from others.

Ms. Dix's name has been associated
with several places and has been
honored by many.

    Sometimes coming up with a name
    to go with the letter is hard,
    but I found one.
