A Moment of Silence

I took Ken to this display on
Friday evening after I had
seen it on the the midday
news. It was more than
I expected! Ken was amazed!
We estimated about 1400 flags
displayed in this field!! Not
too many people had heard
about this display on Friday
but by Saturday evening when
we took a friend to see the flags,
there were A LOT more people
looking, talking quietly, and
taking pictures.
So many emotions run through
your body while you stand there
and look at ALL the flags flying.
What a beautiful display!
Please take time to remember...

Thanksgiving Fun

image: Country Living As we are preparing for our Thanksgiving feasts, I thought I would share some interesting tidbits regarding THE big day. This was a poll from BHG for their Facebook readers. When asked what one item would be missed on Thanksgiving if it wasn't served. 58%---Stuffing 18%---Sweet Potatoes 16%---Cranberry Sauce 8%---Pumpkin Pie Now I know that I am in the minority when it comes to these things, because I wouldn't miss any of them! I don't care for any of it. I would miss: Mashed Potatoes, Corn, Green Salad/Green Beans, Apple Pie What would you miss if it wasn't served for Thanksgiving??? ~Keep on Dreaming~

The Wearing of the Green

Saint Patrick's Day is an annual
feast day celebrating the patron
saint Patrick the day is named for.
***********************************
It is celebrated each year on March
17th. This is a national holiday in
Ireland. There are 3.8 million people
there. But EVERYONE is Irish on the
17th. There are 33.7 million residents
in the US that claim Irish ancestry.
*************************************
It has become a popular holiday in
the US. People wear green, go to
parades, eat corned beef and cabbage,
Irish Soda Bread and enjoy green beer.
****************************************
It is believed that St. Patrick brought
Christianity to the Irish people and
he is believed to "drive the snakes"
out of Ireland also.
************************************
Irish immigrants began observing
St. Patrick's Day in 1737 in Boston.
************************************
The first parade was held in New
York City in 1766.
************************************
Some symbols of St. Patrick's Day.
The leprechaun, shamrocks, pot of
gold and the color green.
************************************
One tradition of the day is to
"pinch" anyone NOT wearing
GREEN on St. Patrick's Day.
************************************
Cities with the top ten parades:
Chicago, Boston, Wash. DC,
NYC, St Louis, Savannah, GA,
San Fransisco, Philadelphia,
Kansas City and Dublin, OH.
***********************************
There are nine places in the US
that share the name Dublin.
There are four places in the US
that share the name Shamrock.
North Carolina has a city named
Emerald Isle.
***********************************
May the luck of the Irish be
with you this St. Patrick's Day
and don't forget to wear your
GREEN.

Holiday Decor

Hello- My name is Melinda and I'm a "Holiday Horder." AND I'm darn proud of it! Yesterday I spent several hours organizing and reorganizing our holiday totes. I even had to buy two more big ones. We have more holiday decorations than anyone really needs BUT... one never knows what they'll use from year to year. Right???? I don't decorate the same each year, there are different combos, arrangements and some things are put in an entirely different place. Now some of you are probably thinking--"why not get rid of some of the stuff?" In reality that would work but some of the things came with me from home when I moved over here and some of it, Ken and I have accumulated ourselves. There are those wonderful garage sales to blame also. What to do?? I don't know. I do know that I have a lot I can choose from to decorate for our holidays! Happy decorating! ~Keep on Dreaming~

A Tribute to Mom's

Happy Mother's Day to EVERYONE! Now I realize that Everyone is not someone's biological Mom but if you are female most of us have those "Mothering" instincts. Sears has a delightful commercial right now for Mother's Day suggesting that we honor ALL the "Mother's" in our lives. It is really cute! The little girl gets something for HER Mom, Aunt, sisters, her Mom's best friend and so on. What a great suggestion Celebrating All the MOMS in our lives. I was blessed to have more than one Mom during my growing up years but I am the person I am today due to MY MOM! Here she is My Mom! She is no longer with us. It will be three years in December . I miss her each and every day. But as time presses on the pain eases. Mom was a hoot--she was funny, very open minded, loved to watch the news AND The Price is Right--with Bob Barker. The stories she would tell of her growing up years were so fun to listen to. As I said earlier-I am the person I am today because of her. When I was nine my Dad passed then she became both parents and a remarkable job she did! She was never really strict but I new the right and wrong of things. Yes, I tested her but what child doesn't? She gave me the freedom to be me andspread my wings the way I saw fit. She was there for EVERYTHING--life's up and downs, boy problems, school issues, friend disputes, graduations, job changes, and the big one MY WEDDING! Which began with me leaving the nest and moving to the big state of Kansas. I was one of those that lived at home for many reasons--Mom and I got along great and neither of us saw a reason for me to pay rent etc when I could stay at home. I'm sure some therapist would have some say about this but I didn't have too many transition issues leaving and Mom wasn't that far away. Mom came to live with us almost three years before she passed and that was a bit of a transition. But I wouldn't have had it any other way. Nor would Ken. Now those two together --OH, MY! What a hand full they could be. :) Ken was MOM'S "son" and that was it for her! Mischief makers they were. Thaks MOM for being THE BEST Mom in the world, we miss you and love you Happy Mother's Day!
Now this lady here was THE BEST
Mother-in Law a girls could have!
Ken's MOM passed almost four years
ago and is missed just as much as
my own Mom. Of course Ken misses
her more.
Janie was "old school" and I say that
with utmost respect to her. She and
Pops raised five kids in the late fifties
and early sixties. I still don't know how
they did that on one income! She was a
"stay at home" Mom, she kept a very
clean house and worked hard at keeping
Pops in line! :)
Janie wore an apron everyday and now I
have them. They are very precious to me!
Janie AND Pops did a wonderful job
raising Ken. He is the absolute gentleman.
He was not a Momma's boy but he had
that absolute respect, love and honor for
her and still does today.
Thanks ,Janie for raising a great guy and
I'm proud to call him my HUSBAND!
We love and miss you daily!
~~~~~HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO
EVERYONE!!!~~~~~
Top 'O the Morn'n
St. Partick's Day---March 17th is the day
honoring St. Patrick. He was a missionary
credited for converting the Irish to
Christianity and is also known for
"driving the snakes" (spirits) out of
Ireland.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In America--it's a day of wearing GREEN
and celebrating! The first American
celebration took place in Boston, MA
in 1737.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Items associated with St. Patrick's Day:
Color GREEN-because it is the color of
Spring, Ireland and the Shamrock.
LEPRECHAUN-Irish Fairy (little body)
It is said he make shoes and brogues.
Keep an eye on him (if you find him)
he'll lead you to his treasure--if you
don't, he'll vanish and...
BLARNEY STONE-A stone set in the
wall of Blarney Castle tower in the
village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is
said to give the kisser persuasive
eloquence (Blarney).
SHAMROCK-A member of the clover
family. It is said to have been picked
by St. Patrickto explain the mystery
of the Trinity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good Luck Signs:
Finding a Four -Leaf Clover
Wearing Green-so you don't get
pinched
Kissing the Blarney Stone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
St. Patrick's Songs:
When My Irish Eyes Are Smiling
I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover
My Wild Irsh Rose
Also, check out the groups:
Celtic Thunder--first song on my
playlist
Celtic Women
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kansas City loves to celebrate and one of
KC's favorite celebrations is the St.
Patrick's Day Parade! It goes through
the downtown area. Those who are true
Irish and those that are Irish for the day
line the parade route-enjoying the floats,
marching bands, people and animals in
the parade.
Then it's off to the Irish pubs and
restaurants for more celebrating!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For more interesting St. Partick's
fun skiddle daddle over to "Garden
of Daisies" (on my sidebar) she has
had several cool posts about the holiday.
Have Fun!!
Thanksgiving Traditions
Top Five Thanksgiving Traditions:
1--Turkey and the trimmings--The centerpiece of most
Thanksgiving feasts is the "big bird." My favorite part of
the feasting is the MASHED POTATOES as most of you
know. What's yours?????
2--Football-The first intercollegiate championship
game played in 1876.
The Detriot Lions played their first Thanksgiving
game in 1934.
The Dallas Cowboys played their first Thanksgiving
game in 1966.
3--The Big Parade--The first Thanksgiving parade
was organized by Gimbel's Department Store in
Philidelphia.
The New York Macy's Parade began in 1924. Today
it is seen by over 46 million people on TV or in person.
What is your favorite balloon in the parade?
4--The wish from the wishbone--It is said that
whoever ends up holding the larger piece of the bone
will have their wish come true. The Roman's brought
this tradition with them when they conquered England
and the English colonists carried the tradition to America.
5--Thanksgiving is most commonly celebrated at home
with family and friends. It is also the time to give
thanks for the people around us and the blessings of
the past year. What are you thankful for?
Here in Kansas City THE biggest tradition is the PLAZA
LIGHTING CEREMONY. That is when everybody and their
brother gather on the KC Plaza and wait for the switch to be
flipped. The main stage hosts a variety of schools, entertainers
and guests. A local celeb and children from the audience do
a countdown and the lights fill the Plaza. It is a beautiful site
to see!!! As you can see by the picture above.
