Princess Diana (1961-1997)
Quick Facts:
In her early years, she was known
as Lady Diana. She acquired the
title after her father inherited the
title of Earl Spencer.
She was an average student.
Very quiet young woman.
She enjoyed music and was an
accomplished pianist.
She also enjoyed sports and dance.
Some of her early jobs included:
Dance Instructor
Preschool Assistant
Nanny for an American family
living in London.
Nursery Teacher's Assistant
First wife of Charles, Prince of
Wales.
They had two children:
Prince William, Duke of
Cambridge (1982)
Prince Henry "Harry," Prince of
Wales. (1984)
They are second and third in line
for the British Throne.
She took the role as the Prince's
mother quite seriously. She chose
their given names, chose their
nanny, their schools,their clothing
and planned their outings.
When she could, she took them to
school.
She first met Charles in 1977 while
he was dating her sister Sarah.
In 1980, after a country weekend
where they were guests, Charles
found interest in Diana as a potential
bride.
A sailing weekend was next.
Then an invitation came from
Balmoral, the family's Scottish
residence to meet the family in
November of 1980.
The Prince proposed in February of
1981. But was kept secret for several
weeks.
The engagement became official on
February 24, 1981.
She selected an engagement ring
similar to her Mother's.
She was 20 years old when she
married Charles and became the
Princess of Wales.
Their wedding was described as a
"Fairytale" and viewed by 750
million people on television and
another 600,000 lined the streets
to see the festivities.
As the Princess she undertook
some of the duties of the Queen
and represented her at oversees
functions.
Five years into their marriage,
things became rocky and in 1996
they divorced.
Diana led an active life socially and
royally and was very active in charity
work.
Sadness came in 1997 when Diana
was fatally injured in a car crash.
Many, many, people mourned her
death around the world.
