Yes, it is THAT time of the year!
I entered the public school system
in 1968--Kindergarten and finished
my school career in 1984 with a
college degree. I'll tell you things
have changed a lot!
For today's stimulating trivia, I
thought I would share some school
observations, remember that I work
in the public school system.

The cost for school when I was young
involed supplies and new clothes. There
may have been more but my parents
dealt with that. High school cast a bit
more BUT nothing like today and of
course college was on it's own plain
when it came to those costs and it still
is today.
One of the things that blows my mind is
how little schools and children's education
is thought of these days. NOONE wants to
fund anything where schools are concerned
and school administrations are all wound
up about testing and good scores so they
get that gov't funding. Today's classes are
run on getting ready for test time. Whatever
happened to those days wher teachers got
to actually teach and help their students
learn? It's no wonder we have sooooo many
children and young adults who are having
tough times in the real world.
I'll get off my soap box but it really TICKS
me that Education is so low on the Gov't
totem pole!!!!

I'm right there with you Melinda. And don't forget that once upon a time, most kids were able to get their own school supplies...now many of us here use our own money to get them just the basics, like pencils. Sad state of affairs.
ReplyDeleteMoney is short especially in Special Ed. I was in the middle school and we wrote a grant to purchase a video cam, a digital camera(this was the first year they were available), money to fund opening a school store and some field trips. That little store supplied us with funds for years to buy what we needed for the classroom, field trips and then some. We shared with other classrooms and purchased things for the school also.
ReplyDeleteHave a great year, hon!!!
I gave you a lovely blog award

This is so true, Melinda! You really took me for a trip down memory lane, thinking of my own experience in Kindergarten. I can remember the most exciting part of the first day was the teacher giving everyone a brand new box of crayons with our name written on it. I know they passed out other supplies (all paid for by the schools), but I so vividly remember those crayons!
ReplyDeleteHappy back to school! Did you get some new clothes? A box of 64 crayons? A new lunchbox?
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Agreed! I enjoyed your trivia as always. Bless your heart for being a teacher. I plan to try my hand at substitute teaching this school year (pray for me.. lol!). -Tammy
