A-Z of Crafts

L--Lace

A delicate fabric made of thread or
yarn in an open work web.

It is made by hand or machine.

It was first developed in Europe .
during the 16 century.

Linen , silk , gold and silver thread
were originally used. Now cotton
thread is used though linen and silk
are still available.

Types of lace--

Needle lace is made with a needle and
thread.
Cutwork is constructed by removing
threads from a background and filling
with embroidery.
Bobbin lace is made with a bobbin.
Machine lace is created or replicated
on a machine.
There are many more types.

Lace was used by clergy in the early
Catholic Church as part of vestments.

Items made with lace--
Doilies
Ribbons
See through clothing
Bows and other hair pieces

Love lace. It is so pretty and can
be added to so many things. I
added lace to the bottom of a flannel
shirt to add a feminine touch to the
shirt.

Do you use lace? If so, how?

  1. I have used lace in the past as trims on finished cross stitch pieces.
