A-Z of Crafts

J--Jewelry (making)

Jewelry is seen as a universal accessory
such as necklaces, rings, earrings,
brooches and cufflinks.
It is made from a wide variety of items.
In ancient times, shells, bones and stones
were used. Today metal and gemstones
are used in jewelry making, we also see
amber, coral and beads.
Back to the ancient days, it may have
been worn as a protection from danger.
Amulets or Devotional beads
Jewelry can also be worn as a status
symbol, for it's materials, patterns or
meaningful symbols.

Many cultures used/use jewelry in many
different ways:
Wedding doweries
Slave Beads - trade or currency
Brooches or buckles- started out as a
functional piece but today they are more
of a decorative item
Group affiliation - Cross or Star of
David
Wedding Rings - seen as a symbol of
love for one person

On a different note jewelry has been made
to be worn on a variety of body parts.
From hairpins to toe rings. We have seen
piercings on everybody part imaginable.

Jewelry is worn more by women but we
see quite a few males who wear some
kind of jewelry. Kids and older folks
run right up there too.

A friend's sister made this for me.
I wore it to a wedding.

I have made several bracelets for
myself and friends.
Single stand and multi strand
bracelets. Pictures went haywire
and I lost them. I can post them
at a later date if you want to see
them.

Do you make jewelry?

K is up tomorrow--see you then.

  1. Nope, not a jewelry maker. But I love seeing what others create!
