Back In the Day.....

Now that we are into the last week of the
Olympics, let's go back a few years:
Who: A total of 16 nations sent athletes,
totaling 258 (247 men and 11 women.)
What: "The International Winter Sports Week. " It lasted for 11 days and 16 events
took place.
When: 1924
Where: Chamonix, France
Events that first year were:
4 Man Bobsled
Biathlon
Curling
Figure Skating--Women's, Men's and Pairs
Hockey
Cross Country Skiing--18k, 50k
Ski Jumping
Nordic Combined Skiing
Speed Skating--500m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m
combined
Speed skating--500m was the very first event. It
was won by American-Charlie Jewtraw.
Finland and Norway were the big winners. They
won 28 of the 43 medals awarded.
Norway--17
Finland--11
US and Great Britain--4
Austria, Switzerland and France--3
Sweden--2
Canada--1
Fast forward to today:
The Winter Olympic Sports are divided into three
categories--
1. Ice--
Bobsled*
Luge
Skeleton
Hockey*
Ice Skating and Dancing*
Speed Skating and Short Track*
Curling*
2. Alpine, Skiing and Snowboarding--
Freestyle Skiing--Aerials, Moguls and
Ski Cross
Alpine Skiing
Snowboarding--Parallel Giant Slalom,
Halfpipe and Snowboard cross
3. Nordic--
Biatholon--Crosscountry Skiing and
Target Shooting*
Ski Jumping*
Crosscountry Skiing*
Nordic Combined--Ski Jumping and
Crosscountry Skiing*
As of this evening the Medal count is:
US---26
Germany--23
Normay--17
The events marked with a * are the FIRST
Olympic events.
