Foods Around the World

A--Austria

According to Wikipedia Austrian cuisine
is native to Austria (obviously) with
influences from Central Europe and
throughout the  Austro-Hungarian
Empire. It is often associated with
Viennese cuisine also.

Breakfast is "continental" consisting of
bread rolls that are served with jam or
cold meats and cheese.
The miday meal used to be the main meal
but with the modern times most work far
from home and have their main meal when
they get home.

Some popular Austrian foods:

Rindsuppe--a soup with a golden color.
Goulash--a stew or soup made with meat,
vegetables and various seasonings. Often
eaten with bread or rolls.
Liptauer--a spicy cheese spread served on
a slice of bread.
Powidi--a thick sweet jam made with plums.
Apfelstrudel apple strudel---a popular
pastry in Austria.
Wurstsemmel--ham rolls--a slice of ham
and cheese rolled in bread.
Weiner  Schnitzel--a traditional Austrian
dish made with meat that is thinned with
a mallet and fried in bread crumbs, flour
and egg.

Sweets and desserts:

The Sachetorte is a chocolate cake made
with apricot jam filling and whipped cream.
Linzer Torte---it is a short crumbly pastry
with a lattice design on top. Usually served
at traditionally at Christmas.
Kaiserschmarr'n--a rich fluffy sweet
pancake made with raisins and fruits.

There is more that can b said but we might
be on this post the whole month!

Hope you enjoyed your Austria trip, come
by tomorrow as we head to another country.
