D--DIY (ing)

The official definition for DIY is:
"The method of building, modifying
or repairing things without experts
or professionals.

You have heard this phrase a xillion
times I am sure. Believe it or not people
have been DIYing since the 6th century.
By 1912 the term was more associated with
consumers who were interested in home improvments.  I suppose each decade had
it own trend in DIY.

I don't remember my Dad or Mom use the
term DIY as a kid in the 70's, they just fixed
things, painted rooms or changed things
around. In the 80's, I did the same thing.
For me the term "DIY" didn't land in my
thought process until I was introduced
to HGTV and that was after I was married. 
Today we hear it all the time.

I like to DIY how about you?

Since we are redoing our bedroom, some
things have changed. Window latches went
from brass to black, a shelf will go from a
scratchy wood to a beautiful black, I am
keeping a wreath but tweeking it a bit.

E--Etching

The definition from Dictionary.com says--

An artistic print made from a plate on which
the artist has etched a design with acid.
There were too many years listed as to when
this process was "invented." More info on the
web.

Back in the day metal plates and a variety of chemicals were used in the process for etching.
As the years went by people became concerned
with the chemical make up of the etching ingredients, this led to the development
of less toxic etching methods in the late
20th century.

We I chose this craft, I had in mind the
etching in the picture above. Truthfully
I had no clue about the use of metal plates
and chemicals. Learn something new each
day.

Glass Etching--
It comprises the techniques of creating art
on the surface of glass by applying acidic,
caustic or abrasive substances. Traditionally
done after glass is blown or cast, although
mold-etching has replaced some forms of
surface etching. (According to Google)

Materials Used:

Etching Cream--Armour Etch
Glass Cleaner-Isoprpyl Rubbing Alcohol
Painter's Tape
Gloves (plastic)
Popsicle Sticks--use for applying the cream
Stickers--Letters or Numbers. This depends
on what you are etching
Drop Cloth
Glassware--Some Pyrex bakeware can't be
used due to the high heat tempering process.

I'm not going to go into the how's of glass
etching, there are many videos out on the
web if you are interested.
