Is It Truly Real???

Reality TV is a cultural
phenomenon that is here
to stay and is a fast growing
trend on television.
Depending on what you
read, reality tv is watch
by viewers aged 2 to????
We see so much of it
on tv right now due to
the fact that costs are
inexpensive and they
are easy to use as fillers
if a series is cancelled.
What so you think...
Is it real or is it scripted?
In 2005, 82% of viewers
felt that it was scripted.
Reality TV is rumored to
make up 17% of program-
ming between public and
cable.
Do you remember----
America's Funniest Videos
America's Most Wanted
How about---
Big Brother
Fear Factor
The Real World
America's Got Talent
Today we have---
American Idol
Dancing With...
Amazing Race

Survivor
Extreme Home Makeover
and many, many more.
Which ones do you watch???

Something New--At Least to Me

Today on the Nate Berkus Show
(which I love), Nate and desingner
friend were discussing party ideas.
As they were talking, old flatware
came up. To dress up the flatwear,
the designer used the item above to
dip the ends of the flatwear in. As
you can see it is called "Plasti Dip."
I had never heard of this but
according to their website, it has
been around for awhile and used
and a variety of things. It comes in
various of colors and forms.
Check out their website--I just
Googled "Plasti Dip." Could be fun
to use if you have something to
transform and I know that my
fellow bloggers can find
SOMETHING to use this on!!!!
Have fun!!!
OK---I've had it! I have tried
three times to edit this post
to get it singled spaced!!
But Nooooooooooooo, it
keeps DOUBLE spacing it!!!

The Wearing of the Green

Saint Patrick's Day is an annual
feast day celebrating the patron
saint Patrick the day is named for.
***********************************
It is celebrated each year on March
17th. This is a national holiday in
Ireland. There are 3.8 million people
there. But EVERYONE is Irish on the
17th. There are 33.7 million residents
in the US that claim Irish ancestry.
*************************************
It has become a popular holiday in
the US. People wear green, go to
parades, eat corned beef and cabbage,
Irish Soda Bread and enjoy green beer.
****************************************
It is believed that St. Patrick brought
Christianity to the Irish people and
he is believed to "drive the snakes"
out of Ireland also.
************************************
Irish immigrants began observing
St. Patrick's Day in 1737 in Boston.
************************************
The first parade was held in New
York City in 1766.
************************************
Some symbols of St. Patrick's Day.
The leprechaun, shamrocks, pot of
gold and the color green.
************************************
One tradition of the day is to
"pinch" anyone NOT wearing
GREEN on St. Patrick's Day.
************************************
Cities with the top ten parades:
Chicago, Boston, Wash. DC,
NYC, St Louis, Savannah, GA,
San Fransisco, Philadelphia,
Kansas City and Dublin, OH.
***********************************
There are nine places in the US
that share the name Dublin.
There are four places in the US
that share the name Shamrock.

Emerald Isle.
***********************************
May the luck of the Irish be
with you this St. Patrick's Day

Mother Nature's Fun

We have been "enjoying" a BLIZZARD. Yes, my friends that is what I said. Actually we have been under a "Blizzard Warning" all day and it will continue into tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. According to NOAA a Blizzard Warning is when there are "sustained winds or frequent gusts of wind up to 35 miles an hour OR greater. Considerable falling/ blowing snow and reduced visability to less than 1/4 mile for a period of 3 hours or more." We are also under a state of emergency and many of the main highways are closed. Most stores and restaurants closed early and all schools were closed. Schools are closed tomorrow too. I can say that I have never experienced anything like this before. Storms yes, a blizzard no. I guess there IS a first time for everything. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Below you will see pics as our storm developed. The first three were taken around noon. Compare the wagon pics.
The next set of pics were
taken between 3:00 pm
and 4:00 pm.
We are doing fine.
We have groceries and
heat plus power. This
too shall pass.
Right now it is 10 degrees
with a wind chill of -10
degrees. Wind gusts
around 40 miles an
hour!

Please don't forget the

Valentine Card Challenge.

See Sunday's post. I would

appreciate any help.

Thanks!!!!

Did You Know?????

We are going to investigate
Winter Weather Trivia
today.
I'm sure most of
you are asking "WHY?"
Well, because this stuff
is interesting and I am
one of THOSE "Winter
lovers."
**Water spontaneously
freezes at -40 degrees F.
If you were to pour a cup
of water out the window
it would freeze before
hitting the ground.
**A car radiator is NOT
effected by Wind Chill.
But people and animals
are--especially exposed
skin.
**The difference between:
HAIL--A chunk or stone of
ice dropped from a thunder-
storm.
SLEET--Frozen Rain.
FREEZING RAIN--Rain that
freezes to surface--ie: tree
or road.
**TRUE or FALSE??
It must be 32 deg. or colder
to snow.
FALSE--It has snowed before
at 40 deg. due to temps. in the
clouds being below 32 deg.
where the snow is forming.
**One inch of rain is
equal to 10 inches of
snow!!!!! When melted.
**It CAN snow from
clear skies due to ice
crystals falling from
clear skies when temps.
are in the single digits.
**One inch of ICE is
more dangerous to
trees and power lines
one inch of wet snow.
***********************
Now see that wasn't so
bad was it? Betcha you
learned at least ONE
thing. I know I did.
Now you have party
chatter that you can use
at the next party--when/if
things get dull. :)

Red and White Yumminess !

One of traditional candies
that we see at Christmas is
the Candy Cane.
Candy canes started their
beginnings by being pure white and in stick form.
It was not until the early
20th century that they
appeared with the red
stripes.
These little yummies are
not only used as holiday
treats but as decorations
too. The use of the candy
canes on trees came to the
US in the 1800's. They
also come in various sizes
and now in different
flavors. Do you put these
on your tree? Ours go in our stockings.
Many people have given
religious meaning to the
shape of the candy cane.
Some say that it's shape
is like the letter "J" in
Jesus' name. Some say
it represents a shepherds
crook. Similiar to the Good
Shepherd watching over
us like little lambs.
It is a hard candy, solid
like a "rock" the foundation
of the church.
The flavor is peppermint,
which is similiar to another
member of the mint family-
hyssop. In the Old
testament it was used for
purification and sacrifice,
it alos is said to symbolize
the purity of Jesus and
sacrifice he made.
The colors are said to
represent:
WHITE--purity of Jesus
and his virgin birth.
BOLD RED--God's love.
The three fine stripes--
The HOLY TRINITY
From it's plain beginnings
to it's familiar shape and
traditional color, the candy
cane is a symbol of Christmas
and a reminder of the meaning
of the holiday.
Enjoy the taste of Christmas
this season.

It's Time for a Parade

One of our holiday traditions is
the Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade. It is one of my
favorite things about the
holiday.
The 84th Macy's parade is
this Thursday beginning at
9 am on NBC.
Tom Turkey is the lead
act of the parade. But he
does get some help from
his friends.
15 large character balloons.
80-100 trained personnel
it takes to steer the largest
balloons down the parade
route.
65 feet is the average height
in feet of the tallest balloons.
300-500 pounds is the
dead weight of each balloon
character, depending on
it's shape and size.
3 weeks is the amount
of time prior to the parade
that the balloons are unveiled
to Macy's staff.
12 feet is the height of the
caravan of balloons and floats
that parades through the
Lincoln Tunnel on Thanksgiving
Eve. The tunnel is shut down
to other traffic during the hour
and a half it takes to transport
the balloons and floats.
3 years is the time the parade
featured live animals from the
Central Park Zoo. But since
they scared a few, they didn't
make it past 1926.
1945 first TV appearance for
the parade.
1000+ cheerleaders
800 clowns running around
12 marching bands.
But the REAL headliner is
SANTA CLAUS!!!
The Christmas season begins
for me, when I see Santa!!
Ho! Ho! Ho!

Candy, candy, candy

One of my favorite things about this
season is the yummies above. I like
them separate or together. This
would be Brach's Autumn Mix.
The Indian corn is delish and
so are the little pumpkins.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now for our candy trivia:
~~If Brach's lined all of the candy
corn and mellowcremes they sell
end to end it would circle the earth
4 times.
~~Brach's is the number one candy
corn maker in the nation.
~~American's consume an estimated
20 million pounds of candy corn
each year.
~~October 30th has been designated
as National Candy Corn Day. Pick up
a bag and celebrate!!!
HAPPY SNACKING!!!!

THE POWER OF PINK

October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month.
According to the Kansas
City Star--Sunday's
Edition, the first ribbon
was handed out nearly
20 years ago. Ever since,
the color PINK has stood
for something SPECIAL.
Today we see totes, t's,
mugs, pins, hats, scarves
etc, in the pink.
I think everyone has been
touched by this beast and
I'd like for us to take a
moment to remember those
who have fought the fight,
those who are fighting the
fight and their families who
are helping to fight the fight.
GOOOO PINK!!!!!
