The Wearing of the Green

Saint Patrick's Day is an annual
feast day celebrating the patron
saint Patrick the day is named for.
***********************************
It is celebrated each year on March
17th. This is a national holiday in
Ireland. There are 3.8 million people
there. But EVERYONE is Irish on the
17th. There are 33.7 million residents
in the US that claim Irish ancestry.
*************************************
It has become a popular holiday in
the US. People wear green, go to
parades, eat corned beef and cabbage,
Irish Soda Bread and enjoy green beer.
****************************************
It is believed that St. Patrick brought
Christianity to the Irish people and
he is believed to "drive the snakes"
out of Ireland also.
************************************
Irish immigrants began observing
St. Patrick's Day in 1737 in Boston.
************************************
The first parade was held in New
York City in 1766.
************************************
Some symbols of St. Patrick's Day.
The leprechaun, shamrocks, pot of
gold and the color green.
************************************
One tradition of the day is to
"pinch" anyone NOT wearing
GREEN on St. Patrick's Day.
************************************
Cities with the top ten parades:
Chicago, Boston, Wash. DC,
NYC, St Louis, Savannah, GA,
San Fransisco, Philadelphia,
Kansas City and Dublin, OH.
***********************************
There are nine places in the US
that share the name Dublin.
There are four places in the US
that share the name Shamrock.
North Carolina has a city named
Emerald Isle.
***********************************
May the luck of the Irish be
with you this St. Patrick's Day
and don't forget to wear your
GREEN.

  2. Unfortunately St. Patricks Days isnt celebrated that much in England(!?), exept in pubs of course. As both my parents and all three of my brothers were born there I obviously celebrate at home! My heart is definitely in Eire! Lovely post. Lots of love from a very dull England, one of those days that doesnt wake up!! xx

Yes, I have been away from the blog for a little while... family is taking up most all of my time right now. But I'm going to try hard to pop in every once in a while. I have missed everyone.
