IT IS HERE!!!!

It's official--It's FALL!!!
Guess what today's trivia is about? You got it Fall.
The word "Fall" started being used in the 1500's
the British English still use "Autumn" more
than "Fall." WHICH WORD DO YOU USE?
The word "Harvest" was used for Fall/Autumn
commonly up until the end of the 1700's,
then "Harvest" was used to describe the gather-
ing of crops.
The word "Pumpkin" originated from the Greek
word for "large melon" which is "Pepon." That
was changed to "Pompon" by the French and
the English changed it to "Pumpion"
Pumpkins are believed to have originated in
North America with seeds from related plants
found in Mexico dating back to 7000-5500 BC
Pumpkins are from the squash family.
YOU KNEW THAT RIGHT?
The "pumpkin capital" of the world is Morton,
Illinois. This is where you'll find the home
of Libby Corporations pumpkin industry.
Pumpkins vary in color from white to
yellow to orange.
An unripe pumpkin is GREEN--makes sense
right?
WHITE PUMPKINS are simply another
variety of the fall favorite. They are sometimes
called BOO pumpkins. When carved you can
see the orange flesh beneath. White pumpkins
are becoming a favorite decorating item.
Other colors of pumkins you may see are:
BLUE, RED AND TAN.
The green pigment in leaves hides the tree
leaf until the chlorophyll weakens. When
this happens you'll see the leaf start it's
transition to it's next color. This occurs
in leaves that turn RED, YELLOW AND ,
BROWN.
Leaves "fall" to the ground due to less sun-
light, they cannot sustain life, the leaf
becomes weak, breaks off and "falls" to
the ground.
The North Eastern US is said to be one of
THE best places in the world to view
fall colors. I've read this several places and
I know that you can take drives in that area
to see the leaves but here in the Midwest
we have some beautiful fall colors too.
I hope everyone that has looked forward to
this time of year enjoys it, gets to pick
pumpkins and enjoy the fall trasition of
the leaves. HAPPY FALL YA'LL!!!

  1. I use both terms depending on the mood. I've been all over this USA when we had the trucking company and really ya' just can't beat the majestic colors in the Ozarks. A drive to Branson or a hike across the Glade Top Trails of Ava, Mo. just can't be beat.

I always enjoy the vast education I get in the history or origin of your subjects. Makes sense white pumpkins might be called Boo. Have a great evening Melinda!

  2. Hey there. I love your autumn trivia! I also loved your photos from yesterday's post...it makes me realize just how lazy I've become as I have no mums, nor do I have ambition! :P I think I'll just live through your photos for now!

  3. PS...It's true what they say about New England being one of the most, if not the most, beautiful places during autumn. People come from all over the world to see the brilliant and breathtaking displays...they actually plan their vacations around the season!

I've lived in Western Mass my whole life and I never tire of the spectacular fall "painting". We're also headed up to Vermont soon as they start/finish earlier than us.

I should probably start taking my camera with me daily and post some shots. Hmmm....ya think?

  4. I use the word Fall most...and boy do I wish it felt like fall right now here in California :( I just baked muffins even though it is 100 plus outside right now!! Darn it is fall and I'm going to bake, after all there is air conditioning :)
Fun trivia, thanks for sharing, and for your nice comment on my blog about my hip.

  5. Hi Melinda.

Thanks so much for dropping by. I left you a message on my blog.

I LOVED today's post about autumn trivia. I learned so many new things...Mary Catherine, my 5-year old (that seems to strange to say...wasn't she just born, yesterday?!!!) adores the white pumpkins and calls them "Cinderella" pumpkins.

BTW...I've been remiss in blogging b/c I have actually spent some time cleaning/organizing my home. I needed to reclaim it from the likes of Fisher Price Littel People, Barbie, Tonka and the pit crew from Hot Wheels. Would love to have you and Nancy over some time this fall!

    Blessings to you,
    Val

  6. Yippee, Hooray, OOOhhaaa!!!! Melinda, I was so afraid that I offended you with my "Hello Dolly" post. It's the first post you missed commenting on since I found your lovely blog. It begins like I want Hubby to have an affair with Dolly. Ya, right!! The dolly I want him to use is a hand cart to carry his heavy loads on the dairy truck. It was one of those wild and crazy twist I love to do in my writing. Hey, I'm just a wild and crazy girl.

Have a wonderful with your students and God Bless!!!
