Hello!!
Have you ever wondered
why Thanksgiving is on a
Thursday?
Yes? No?
Well, for those of you who have
I have that pertinent information
for you.
Back when Washington was
President, he declared November
26 as a "Day of Publick Thanksgivin."
But then in the years to follow the
holiday was announced by president-
ial proclamation an celebrated on
different days ans months.
In 1863, Lincoln made his Thanks-
giving proclamation, the last
Thursday of November became
standard.
Roosevelt had a double Thanks-
giving problem.
In 1933, there was a five Thursday
November and retailers were
up in arms, wanted him to move
Thanksgiving up one week. He
denied this request and Thanks-
giving was was on the last Thursday
of the month.
Roosevelt was President in 1939
when it happened AGAIN!
Retailers asked for the move again
and he agreed.
After much moving around, finally
in 1941 Congress passed a law making
Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of
November.
Who knew that???
